Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of joining Mitja Jus and Tomaz Juvan, the knowledgable and enthusiastic owners of Roundabout Experiences, for a few days touring Slovenia. Roundabout is a DMC (Signature Preferred) specializing in luxury FIT’s and unique experiences in Slovenia and Croatia.
To be honest, Slovenia hadn’t been on my radar, but I was intrigued after my first conversation with Mitja, who was looking to expand into the US market. So off I went, for a 4-day whirlwind tour of some of the highlights of this hot new destination.
To say I was blown away is an understatement.
Slovenia, shares borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. As a matter of fact, it’s only a two hour drive from Venice Italy, making it a great option to combine with an Italy itinerary.
Bet you didn’t know! : Slovenia was named the worlds first Green destination, taking huge strides towards sustainable tourism, and in 2021, Slovenia will be crowned the European gastronomic region, recognized by foreign experts as the next big culinary destination.
Its geographic location is clearly reflected in the foods and wine. There are actually 4 distinct wine regions, and wineries throughout, including one that is also a boutique hotel (Gredic) The soil is unique in each region, creating some amazing wines- I think we may have tasted them all, and they rival any Italian wines, which have always been my first choice.
Slovenia’s geographic location also connects 4 different worlds of cuisine, and there is a strong emphasis on locally produced ingredients, so it’s fast becoming a very important gastronomic destination in Europe, attracting world-class chefs as well.
You can ski in the Alps in the morning and swim in the Adriatic in the afternoon. Explore caves, visit medieval castles, go hiking in the woods and forests that cover more than half the country, or swim in glacial waters and thermal pools with healing qualities.
Roundabout Experiences is knowledgeable and well connected, and are able to create some very unique and exclusive experiences: concerts in Postijana Cave, helicopter transfers over the Alps, and private wine tours or culinary walking tours to name a few. Their expertise is a huge asset to anyone unfamiliar with the region who might be intimidated by where to start their journey.
This tiny little country offers endless possibilities and ticks all the boxes for just about any traveler- adventure, health and wellness, food and wine, history, romance, culture and family travel.
Needless to say, I’m very excited to be representing Roundabout Experiences, and helping to create more exposure for this exciting new destination they specialize in.
